Shifts and Innovation in China’s Food & Nutraceutical Ingredients Sector

The 26th China International Food Additives and Ingredients Exhibition (FIC 2026) at Shanghai Hongqiao’s National Exhibition and Convention Center offered a defining snapshot of China’s ingredients sector, revealing stark industry pain points alongside promising innovation trends amid economic headwinds. The show saw a counter-cyclical boom in exhibitor participation, as manufacturers sought new leads to offset declining repeat orders, yet the surge exposed critical venue operational inefficiencies.

Homogeneous competition has become acute: 8-10+ players now crowd into once balanced 3-5 manufacturer ingredient tracks, with price undercutting replacing technical barriers and sparking zero-sum infighting. Upstream price hike signals, citing raw material costs and geopolitical supply chain volatility, met deep downstream skepticism—domestic buyers dominated attendance, and global stagflation left end markets unable to absorb cost increases, with few forward orders signed.

The sector’s biggest challenge is eroded trust, driven by manufacturers’ short-term profit mindsets such as contract reneging and product dilution. Industry consensus now centers on supply chain reliability and value alignment over price alone. Amid the headwinds, standout innovations emerged: liposome encapsulation technology boosting bioavailability, next-gen steviol glycosides (Reb M/D/E) with improved taste via enzymatic conversion, and red-hot mood/sleep ingredients (GABA and PS as formulation staples, with China’s top PS maker L&P Food Ingredient boasting a 20-year partnership with Changzhou Comwin Fine Chemicals).FIC 2026 left the industry with sobering reflections: for veteran traders, sourcing reliable long-term partners that reject quick-profit thinking is far more critical than new products. The market has ample ingredients, but craves certainty amid volatility.
